Sharon Lee Hanse was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from High School, she worked for National City Bank in Cleveland for 22 years. During that time, Sharon studied a variety of art media and techniques.
Sharon had been introduced to Calligraphy in high school. After high school she studied many areas of art at the Cleveland Community College, and the Cleveland Art Institute. A renewed interest in calligraphy arose when she was 35.
Since 1978, Sharon has studied the lettering arts and other related subjects such as: paper marbling, papermaking, paste technique, bookmaking, illuminating and gilding.
Using many different letter styles and art forms, Sharon began to create broadsides of poetry and quotations. This study lead to participation in art fairs and exhibits. At one such show, she met fellow artist Richard Hanse. Two years later they were married and Sharon moved to Barnesville, Ohio, where they now reside with their two cats.
Sharon has been privileged to study with some of the finest calligraphers in the world. Among her teachers have been: Sheila Waters, Thomas Ingmire, Peter Thornton, John Stevens, Marsha Brady, Mark vanStone , Carl Rohrs and Leana Fay.
In addition to participating in art fairs across the eastern U.S., Sharon produces works on commission for individuals and businesses.
Sharon promotes the study of calligraphy by teaching classes at local art centers, and to various calligraphy guilds.
The Calligraphic quest is to me one of the most fascinating journeys one can take. Nothing is more satisfying than to create a beautiful work of art using words that are inspirational, uplifting, thought provoking and comforting.
Each poem, quotation or saying is carefully studied in order to determine the best design and layout to use that will enhance and emphasize the meaning.
Exploring various and unusual media and methods to incorporate into designs opens up a world of possibilities and adds a little surprise to some works. Life itself is a fascinating odyssey of epic proportions. I hope to add a little beauty to everyone's trip.
